Make sure that any apps running in the background are closed. You can do this by holding down the home button and selecting "close all apps."
It can be helpful to download a cache clearer from the Google Play Store to keep the game running smoothly.
If you are running the game on Android OS 5.0.2, upgrade to 5.1. The app crashes often with 5.0.2.
